Nascidos Fortes foi escrito no ponto de encontro de dois mundos — a experiência vivida de uma família na UCIN e a ciência que ajuda a compreendê-la. Ao longo do livro, as secções científicas ("A Ciência de…") baseiam-se em investigação revista por pares nas áreas da neonatologia, da neurociência do desenvolvimento e da psicologia, a par de orientações de hospitais, organizações clínicas e associações de apoio às famílias.

As referências abaixo reúnem essa literatura, capítulo a capítulo, para que possa aprofundar qualquer tema que lhe seja próximo — seja o desenvolvimento do cérebro, os cuidados integrados centrados na família (family integrated care), o método canguru, ou o crescimento após uma experiência traumática. Algumas fontes são de carácter técnico; outras foram escritas para pais e mães. Todas moldaram este livro.
